O'Neil she was still in high school year when she took part in the auditions, volunteered in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol within the early months of 2005. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants after the judges praised her singing ability. O'Neil had received high praise by the jury. However, she suffered massive losses during the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed in the bottom three, followed by the second place. They were stunned by the results and encouraged fans to vote for singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after an impressive string of performances. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil beat Goudie and was the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the time of the show. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was announced by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
